Is Internet Porn Addiction Real?

IS INTERNET PORN ADDICTION REAL?

INTERNET PORN ADDICTION

When I started working I honestly didn’t think that internet porn addiction was a real thing.

I didn’t feel like any of my clients were as deeply affected as one might assume they would be based on the invasive nature of an addiction.

THEIR STORIES SOUNDED LIKE:

  • My girlfriend thinks I want her to act like a porn star
  • It upsets me because I always think he is comparing my body to the pornstars body and I can’t compete
  • He thinks I should be able to orgasm as easily as they do and scream with pleasure like they do
  • I don’t see why she doesn’t like me cuming all over her face
  • I only watch it once a week, she just hates the idea of me masturbating
  • She thinks I’m cheating on her when I watch porn

PORN AND RELATIONSHIPS

The above stories are common and they have the ability to cause much heartache.

They highlight the many sexual beliefs and scripts that people have and how these differences can affect us and our relationships negatively.

I love helping individuals and couples work through these, because I understand that sometimes we need a third party to help us understand the situation a little better and to help us work through them.

Even though porn is a part of these issues, the issues in themselves do not represent a porn addiction problem.

MY ORIGINAL OPINION

Yep, I myself didn’t really see the problem with watching some porn.
You watch a little, you play a little, it all sounded normal to me.

In fact if someone was unable to tap into their erotic thoughts, if they didn’t really know what turned them on, I would sometimes suggest a little porn viewing and I still do.

THE STORIES OF MY CLIENTS STARTED TO CHANGE

Porn was starting to affect their sexual functioning significantly and the guys coming in for therapy were getting younger and younger.

I realized that I needed to do some serious research and update my porn addiction knowledge.

I panicked when I realised that internet porn viewing was creating a set of problems that were not being experienced back when people were watching porn on DVD or VHS and when the net was real really slow.

A New Set Of Problems Started To Emerge

My clients were now telling me that:

  • They could no longer get a strong erection when they were playing on their own
  • They struggled getting an erection with their partner
  • They couldn’t sustain an erection during sex
  • They were experiencing performance anxiety
  • Sex and penetration didn’t feel as good as it used to. It was as if their penis
  • Sensitivity had gone down.
  • They couldn’t ejaculate with their partner
  • They no longer felt like having sex
  • Their desire for partnered sex was going down
  • They preferred masturbating
  • They would sometimes be late for work because they were masturbating
  • If single, they sometimes preferred staying home to play on their own then going out.

HAS PORN BECOME A PROBLEM FOR YOU?

I ask my clients when they realized that they had a porn related problem.

Most will say that they have noticed some minor changes in their sexual experiences ages ago, but they had not linked the two together

They didn’t think their sexual problems had anything to do with their internet porn viewing because most didn’t experience these problems when they were watching porn!
